نوع متداول سودوکو در واقع نوعی جدول است که از ۹ ستون عمودی و ۹ سطر افقی تشکیل شده و البته کل جدول هم به ۹ جدول کوچک‌تر (3x3) تقسیم می‌شود.
در این جدول باید در خانه های خالی عددی از ۱ تا ۹ قرار هید به طوری که سه قانون زیر رعایت شود.

در هر سطر جدول باید تمامی اعداد ۱ تا ۹ بدون تکرار قرار گیرد.
در هر ستون جدول باید تمامی اعداد ۱ تا ۹ بدون تکرار قرار گیرد.
در هر ناحیه 3x3 جدول باید تمامی اعداد ۱ تا ۹ بدون تکرار قرار گیرد.
