http://www.itspic.com/images/8953big.jpg
:icon_sad:

http://i.gsmarena.com/vv/newsimg/08/06/samsung-i900/big.jpg The highly rumored Samsung i900 is finally unveiled by Samsung. Called Samsung i900 Omnia (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i900_omnia-2422.php), this Windows Mobile PocketPC seems as a strong competitor of the rumored 3G iPhone, which should be announced today too. Of course, the feature set puts it head-to-head with HTC Touch Diamond (http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_touch_diamond-2368.php) too. However we have the feeling that the HTC TouchFLO 3D might be a bit more spectacular than what the Samsung i900 offers.
Samsung i900 Omnia will be first displayed at the CommunicAsia expo held in Singapore from June 17 to 20 but all details about its specifications are already made public.
Based on Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, the Samsung i900 offers a 3.2-inch WideQVGA display (240 x 400 pixels) and an optical mouse much like the one found in the Samsung i780 (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i780-2124.php). Camera-wise the Samsung i900 Omnia is one helluva amibitious handset - offering a 5 megapixel auto focus snapper with face and smile detection plus auto-panorama shot. Geotagging is also among the camera features since the i900 also packs a built-in GPS receiver.
As style has it, the Samsung i900 Omnia waistline is only 12.5mm and the brushed metal back certainly adds to its refined looks. That figure along with the other dimensions makes it rather identical to the Apple iPhone. Most importantly the i900 shares with the iPhone the same massive internal memory - both an 8GB and a 16GB i900 versions will be available with the microSD still present for further expanding those with up to 16 gigs worth of storage.

Samsung i900 Omnia official photos
The specs sheet of the Samsung i900 is then boosted by the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 7.2Mbps. Thanks to the built-in accelerometer, the UI automatically rotates to follow the handset's current orientation. Wi-Fi support is also on board to make the i900 sound even juicier.
The USB port, FM radio with RDS and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) are among the final touches to this loaded PocketPC.
And since touch-optimization is of critical importance when you strive to compete with Apple's iPhone, Samsung have also ported their TouchWiz user interface for use on Windows Mobile. We saw that Touch UI for the first time on the Samsung F480 (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_f480-2268.php) and we surely enjoyed it.
The Samsung i900 Omnia will be market available from June 2008 (Europe - July 2008), which also coincides with the projected availability of the new 3G iPhone.
Since we had the opportunity to spend some time with the Samsung i900 Omnia before its official release, we can gladly provide you with some more detailed real-life shots as well as a 3D view of Samsung i900 Omnia (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i900_omnia-3d-spin-2422.php). Enjoy!

SEOUL, Korea (AVING) -- <Visual News> Samsung Electronics unveiled its global strategic phone 'OMNIA(model: SGH-i900)' in Korea market.
The OMNIA is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and comes packed with MS Office. Even though the OMNIA has 3.2-inch WQVGA full touch screen, Samsung included an optical mouse for ease navigation.
The OMNIA also has a 5-megapixel CMOS camera with auto-focus, face and smile detection and auto-panorama shot. It comes up to 16GB memory configuration and additional storage can be added via extendable slot. Of course, a smart phone called OMNIA can't go without having a GPS including navigation and geo-tagging capabilities.
The OMNIA is Samsung's first ever Windows Mobile smart phone to feature TouchWiz that lets you personalize the home window with unique widgets. The high-resolution touch-sensitive screen uses intuitive tap, sweep, drag and drop operations as well as an on-screen qwerty keyboard.
The Samsung OMNIA will be unveiled at the upcoming CommunicAsia, Singapore from June 17 to 20 and commercially launched in the Southeast Asian market starting from the same week. The phone will be available in the European market from July. Suggested price is between 600,000(KRW) and 700,000(KRW).

Rumours are great of they are true and this time the Samsung i900 Omnia has finally been revealed by Samsung themselves. The Samsung i900 Omnia is a Windows Mobile Pocket PC and apparently seems a great competitor of the Apple 3G iPhone which we doubt very much but hey we have to go on what a lot of people are saying, but an iPhone 3G killer cannot be true surely?
It does however put it up against the HTC Touch Diamond but then again the HTC device has the HTC TouchFLO 3D which in our eyes seems a little stronger than that of the Samsung i900. Anyway we will give you the details of this new mobile phone, the Samsung i900 Omnia will be first displayed at the CommunicAsia expo which is in Singapore from June 17th to June 20th even though all the details and specs have been announced.
It is based on Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro and the specs include a 3.2-inch Wide QVGA display (240 x 400 pixels) plus an optical mouse, it offers a 5 megapixel auto focus camera with face and smile detection plus auto-panorama shot, built-in GPS receiver and Geo-tagging, the Samsung i900 Omnia is only 12mm thin with a stunning brushed metal casing that does look hot, the i900 is the same as the iPhone when it comes to storage seeing as it will come in either 8GB and a 16GB versions and will be available with microSD.
The Samsung i900 has quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus HSDPA 7.2Mbps and like the iPhone it also has the built-in accelerometer and Wi-Fi support, other specs include FM radio with RDS, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), USB port and TouchWiz user interface. The Samsung i900 Omnia will go on sale from June 2008 and in Europe July 2008, you know around about the same time as the Apple 3G iPhone, wonder who will win

Finally today Samsung brought Samsung i900 to our eyes after a long time of gossips around. Its popular name is Samsung i900 Omnia, so expect to hear this name a lot from now. It seems that it will be a competitor of the expected 3G iPhone. Also in terms of features, it is even close to HTC Touch Diamond which was announced few days ago.
First official exhibition of the Samsung i900 Omnia will be at the CommunicAsia expo which will be held in Singapore from June 17 to 20, but already all of the features of this phone is announced.
First of all, the Samung i900 has Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro as an operating system. In terms of display it features 3.2″ WideQVGA display which is 240×400 pixels and an optical mouse which was known earlier in Samsung i780. Its camera is one of the best mobile cameras in town which is 5 megapixel with auto focus and face/smile detection and even auto-panaroma shot. Another feature of the camera is geotagging which is enabled by built-in GPS receiver of Omnia.
If we mention about how handsome it looks we should certainly tell about its 12.5mm wide waistline and its brushed metal back. Thus in terms of dimensions, we recall Apple iPhone. However most eye catching identity is that the Samsung i900 Omnia shares the same internal memory with iPhone. As in iPhone 8GB and 16GB versions will be available for purchase and this memory is expandable up to additional 16GB with microSD.
In terms of communication enhancement Samsung i900 Omnia has quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps. We also have Wi-Fi support which is very critical feature nowadays.
Finally there are some multimedia features like USB port, FM radioa with RDS and stereo Bluetooth with A2DP which makes this mobile a superstar.
In order to have a fair competition with iPhone, the Samsung i900 Omnia has also touch-optimization which is done by TouchWiz user interface to be utilized on Windows Mobile OS. Touch User Interface was featured on Samsung F480 for the first time and it was very successful.
As for the market release, the Samsung i900 Omnia will be on mobile markets starting from June 2008, but for European users, you expect to get it in July so it will be almost released same time with 3G iPhone for which release date is also expected around that time. However we still don’t have exact price information

Samsung has officially announced the i900 as the Omnia. This will come in 16GB and 8GB versions, while the rest of the specs remain the same for both. The 16GB version will first be available at S$1,098 and those interested will be able to buy one right after CommunicAsia on June 17 from stores and operators. From the images provided by Samsung, the Omnia will come with the widget interface which we have seen in other devices like the Samsung SGH-F480 (http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/mobilephones/0,39051199,42657615p,00.htm)--the difference is that this will be the company's first Windows Mobile phone to sport it.
Leaked images and specifications have led to much speculation about the new Samsung SGH-i900, a Windows Mobile 6.1 PDA-phone. We had one in our hands for a few brief moments, and bring you this quick and dirty hands-on.
When we put it beside an iPhone (see more pictures of that after the jump), it was uncanny how similar its shape was to Apple's product. It's thicker than the iPhone but shorter in length. Typically Samsung, the i900 feels solidly built and has a brushed metal finish all around.
Most of the specifications posted online have been accurate. The i900 does indeed come with HSDPA, 16GB internal storage, a 5-megapixel camera and runs Windows Mobile 6.1. Aside from that, we also know it has a 624MHz Marvell processor, 128MB of RAM and haptic feedback.
For the uninitiated, haptic feedback in a mobile phone is designed to make the feeling of pressing an onscreen virtual button more realistic. If you use your finger on the i900, it buzzes slightly to let you know it has registered that touch. This was very useful when we tried out the custom Samsung text input applications--making it almost like typing on a real keypad.
Like the SGH-i780, the i900 also has an optical sensor for a directional pad. This can be used in two modes--as a regular four-way directional pad or as an onscreen mouse pointer. Pressing on this optical sensor selects.
Though we were not able to get pictures of the custom interface, Samsung seems pretty confident of the i900's usability with just fingers. We know this because the i900 doesn't have a stylus slot. It still has a stylus, but this is attached to the carrying case that will be bundled with the device.
An orientation sensor is built into the i900. When rotated, it does this fancy transition whereby the display shrinks and expands back to fill the screen in a different orientation. The 240 x 400 display does seem a little weird, but is not unheard of--we've seen it in the ASUS M930's internal display. It makes sense, too, if you are to use it as a media player because the aspect ratio is much closer to the 16:9 aspect ratio commonly seen in movie files. To that end, the i900 also comes with a media application that supports DivX and Xvid out of the box. This device will be available soon, we believe. Surely Samsung will not delay it and let the HTC Touch Diamond hog the limelight. Our source suggested that it will be priced similar to the Diamond, which has an RRP of S$1,098.

Just as Apple fanboys are being whipped into hysteria over the iPhone 2 with an expected announcement at 6pm this evening at the Apple WWDC Developers Conference, Samsung comes along and dumps all over their party with the announcement of the Samsung i900 Omnia.
Now Samsung announcing a new phone is nothing new; indeed, the Korean manufacturer has so many phones in its line-up it seemingly announces one every day.
But the Samsung i900 Omnia is different from the rest. With a 3.2" haptic touchscreen interface, 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, and a gloriously updated touchscreen interface, it's nothing less than Samsung's very own iPhone 2 challenger.
Has it got what it takes to take on the latest Apple Jesus-phone? Find out after the jump...
Actually, you won't be able to find out until after 6pm tonight, when Apple finally get around to announcing the iPhone 2! But we can at least speculate on a few things.
Firstly, the Samsuing i900 Omnia will trounce the Apple iPhone 2 in the features department. We know this, because the original iPhone was roundly trounced by virtually all other phones. I mean, a poxy 2 megapixel camera and no video recorder on an up-market phone released in 2007? Ridiculous!
However, it was the quality of the iPhone's interface that made it what it was, not the features.
With the Samsung Omnia, though, things may have shifted against the iPhone. People have now become used to the concept of the touchscreen interface. Seemingly, every new phone released since the iPhone has come with one as standard, and the Omnia is no exception; neither, then, will the iPhone 2 be. It'll become just another touchscreen mobile phone.
Speculation surrounds the iPhone 2 coming with both a-GPS and HSDPA. We know for sure that the Omnia will come both, and that its HSDPA connection will be able to transfer data at an almighty 7.2Mbps. What will the iPhone 2 offer?
And then there are the camera facilities. The Omnia will offer a 5 megapixel camera complete with autofocus, image stabilisation and geo-tagging, as well as video recording and playback in both DivX and XVid formats. The original iPhone never even had a video camera; what will the iPhone 2 bring?
In fact, that's the question that's now being asked by every tech enthusiast; what will the iPhone 2 bring to the party? The original iPhone, though flawed, revolutionized the mobile phone industry. The new iPhone 2 looks set to make the iPhone right by finally providing the features the original iPhone should have had right from tbe start. In itself, this would be great news for both Apple and its users.
However, the mobile phone industry doens't stand still, and Apple's biggest mistake would be to release a phone that does what its previous model should have done all along, while the competition races ahead and releases genuine next-gen phones. It happened to Motorola, who only began making genuinely good RAZRs years after the original launched, but which were hopelessly outgunned by the competition even as they were released.
I hope the iPhone 2 has everything its fan-boys want, as Apple have so obviously disrupted the mobile phone market for the good of us all. One thing's for sure, though - just as the iPhone raised the bar for mobile phones, so the Samsung i900 Omnia has raised it further still. The iPhone 2 has a lot to prove if it's to take on the new pretenders to its crown.

SEOUL, KOREA – June 9 2008: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced the launch of Samsung OMNIA (model name: SGH-i900). It brings together high performance business content, top of the range style and a fun, dynamic multi-media experience, to ensure consumers are always connected both at home and at work. OMNIA, meaning ‘everything’ in Latin and ‘wish’ in Arabic, goes beyond the current top-of-the-line features available in today’s mobile phones. The OMNIA will be available to the market from June 2008.
Bringing a PC environment to Mobile
The new Samsung OMNIA allows users to switch seamlessly between Microsoft Outlook email and productivity applications that replicate the look and feel of their PC - with a stroke of their finger.
Based on the most up to date Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, Samsung OMNIA gives users a mobile extension to their PC experience, with access to MS Office documents such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word. Users can also send and receive email and manage their appointments in Outlook while on the go. The Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system means users can download additional programs as they would on their PC and customize it for their individual needs. For ease of navigation an optical mouse similar to those on laptop computers offers improved usability and one-handed control.
Vivid, lively multimedia experience
Samsung OMNIA delivers the ultimate in digital entertainment thanks to a wide 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD screen for viewing videos and slide shows in high-resolution and advanced audio capabilities. MultiCodec support for DivX, Xvid and other video formats eliminates the hassle of file format conversions. Users also have the assurance of a long-life detachable battery for extended playback.
Samsung OMNIA also comes with a five-megapixel CMOS camera with the latest value-added features, which include auto-focus (AF), face and smile detection and auto-panorama shot.
The handset’s generous internal memory (available in 8GB or 16 GB capacity options and extendable slot for additions) ensures ample storage space for digital assets.
Rounding out the fully comprehensive feature set, Samsung OMNIA also offers GPS, including navigation and geo-tagging capabilities, so users can get their bearings wherever work or life takes them.
The One and Only mobile with everything in touch
Samsung’s patented TouchWiz user interface makes entering data and text simple. With unique widgets, users can customise and personalise the way they use their phone. The Samsung OMNIA's high resolution touch-sensitive screen uses intuitive tap, sweep, drag and drop operations as well as an on-screen qwerty keyboard. It also facilitates easy and convenient calling and texting with a dedicated dome key for controlling communications.
Samsung’s pursuit for design perfection
The Samsung OMNIA presents Samsung’s leadership in design. With maxi-phone capabilities, it boasts a slender, chic form, so users can step out in style. It features an ultra-slim 12.5-mm profile and a platinum-look finish that fits snugly in the palm of the user’s hand. The elegant hairline patterns on the back of the phone bring the perfection in style.
Geesung Choi, President of Samsung Telecommunication Business, said: “I am very excited to introduce Samsung OMNIA, a mobile device that truly delivers the best possible features for today’s busy, connected consumer. Samsung OMNIA demonstrates our vision for the Samsung mobile business, which is to provide premium phones for users who desire functionality, style, usability and entertainment in one innovative device. The OMNIA mobile range will help users to be at the forefront of work and play and at the same time, to stay connected anytime, anywhere.”
The Samsung OMNIA will be unveiled at CommunicAsia, Singapore from June 17 to 20 and commercially launched in the Southeast Asian market starting from the same week. The phone will be available in the European market from July.

Samsung officially took the wrappers off of the OMNIA (http://samsungomnia.com/) at CommunicAsia 2008 (CMMA 2008) in Singapore. Our editor from SlashPhone was at the press launch, and took a boat load of images for your viewing pleasure.
http://www.phonemag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/samsung-omnia-communicasia-2008-1-phonemag.jpg
While the Samsung Omnia is no iPhone 3G killer, it will surely kick the crap out of all the other Windows Mobile 6.1 powered devices on the market. That my friends also include the HTC Diamond (http://www.phonemag.com/htc-touch-diamond-unboxing-first-impressions-063095.php) and Touch Pro (http://htctouchpro.com/). Similar to the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro, Samsung wrapped Windows Mobile 6.1 with TouchWiz (http://samsungtocco.com/) making life easier for owners to navigate through the menus and getting to the things they need quicker.
http://www.phonemag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/samsung-omnia-communicasia-2008-45-phonemag.jpg
It’s hard to beat the OMNIA’s 5-megapixel CMOS camera (http://www.phonemag.com/samsung-omnia-hands-on-at-communicasia-2008-063173.php#) with auto-focus (AF), face and smile detection and auto-panorama shot. While the HTC Diamond comes with 4GB of user storage memory, the OMNIA comes in 8 or 16GB memory configuration and additional storage can be added via extendable slot. The HTC Diamond lacks the ability to expand for additional storage. Of course, a smart phone called OMNIA can’t go without having a GPS, including navigation and geo-tagging capabilities, so you’d never get lost wherever you are.
http://www.phonemag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/samsung-omnia-communicasia-2008-10-phonemag.jpg
My biggest problem using the HTC Diamond is that the keys are slightly smaller on the 2.8-inch screen while the OMNIA’s 3.2-inch WQVGA TFT LCD display offers a wider and larger keys to press on. There’s also QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode. The high-resolution touch-sensitive screen uses intuitive tap, sweep, drag and drop operations as well as an on-screen QWERTY keyboard. It also facilitates easy and convenient calling and texting with a dedicated dome key for controlling communications.
http://www.phonemag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/samsung-omnia-communicasia-2008-15-phonemag.jpg
While the Samsung OMNIA is nowhere near the size and thickness of the HTC Diamond, I find it much more practical, especially if you’ve got fat fingers. It’s still pretty ultra-slim measuring 12.5mm and has a platinum look finish. Samsung added details such as elegant hairline patterns on the back of the phone to bring the “perfection in style.”

http://www.phonemag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/samsung-omnia-communicasia-2008-32-phonemag.jpg
The Samsung Omnia will be available in Singapore this week, followed by Europe at the end of
July. China and Taiwan will get the Omnia in August. The Omnia will cost about 1098 SGD for the
16GB configuration without contract in Singapore. No information on the availability or pricing on the 8GB version yet.
Enjoy the image gallery! Phone Magazine’s review unit of Samsung Omnia should be arriving any day now. So make sure to check back for a full review!

http://www.writeage.com/images/june-mobile-news-samsung-i900.jpg

We’ll start evaluation with daylight images. Although the weather hasn’t been our good friend in the past weeks, but we still managed to catch an afternoon with bright sunlight: we just couldn’t wish for better circumstances. We have intentionally used the automatic settings and set light metering to center weighted – where we could. We have also set sensitivity to automatic, as in such a nice weather we were sure that the phones will choose the lowest ISO value – and if they don’t then they deserve to get marked down because of the noisy pictures.

Nokia N82 / Sony Ericsson C902 / LG KF750 Secret / Samsung F480
The best picture was obviously taken by LG KF750, it has low noise, lots of details and nice colors. The images taken by Samsung G600 and U900 are also okay, i900 also performed well; it just over-exposed the image a bit. The performance of C902 and G810 was medium; both had high image noise, while in the case of N82 the edges of the image are very blurred. The anti-award goes to F480, it took a picture which is poor in details, blurred and has very soft tones.

Nokia N82 / Sony Ericsson C902 / LG KF750 Secret / Samsung F480
After this we have turned on night mode and turned 90 degrees to take a picture of something else. i900 was finished with this mode, it set sensitivity to ISO 50 and light metering to spot, and the result was an image underexposed with a couple of light values – although there would be no problems with the details. The change made no good for U900 and F480, both took overexposed, blurred images. G810 had better results, although it has a considerable amount of noise. N82 still leads the pack, Secret remained at the zero it started with, while C902 is no big deal. G600 took a slightly better image; the reason for this is under the sample images.

The table below contains the shutter speed, based on EXIF information. U900 and G810 won’t stress the users with such information, so we can’t say anything about them, but in the case of the others it turned out what does the night mode do. In the case of G600 shutter speed increased significantly, as in AUTO mode, the camera used 1 second shutter speed in the dark, which is mostly impossible to keep in hand without shaking. All the others, with the exception of i900, have decreased shutter speed, I think that too much, as 1/4 second is still too long to keep the camera steady, even more in case of a small and light phone.

Pictures taken with flash
Finally we have tried the flash in complete darkness. None of the phones had problems with focusing, when there was no AF light, the flash started to function. On the test pictures you can see that the phones that have Xenon flash (G810 and N82) are the best, and from the others only i900 produced a usable photo. The weakest is U900’s built-in flash, but the others can’t be proud of their accomplishments either. C902’s image is the strangest, it is characterized by bad white balance and very high image noise.

Probably not many of you know what a Xenon flash is and why is it good for us, so here’s the time to clear things up. Well, these types of flashes have the most basic difference from the others that they work with gas. It was a joke, but it’s almost true: there is a pipe, filled with Xenon gas, and on the two edges there are electrodes, between which electrons start moving in case of an impulse. These react with the atoms of the gas, and thus the flash is produced. The only problem is that this needs high voltage, many hundreds or thousands of Volts, or otherwise the electron won’t move fast enough to react with Xenon. As we know cell phones are not famous for their batteries of thousands of Volts, and that’s why transformers come to aid, and this can increase voltage in such a manner that is enough to create the reaction. The whole thing is better then LED flashes because it has a more powerful light, but since such a voltage cannot be kept for a long time, these flashes can’t be continuously lit. Users’ opinions are different in the matter if this is good or bad, as there are many who use the conventional LED flashes as a flashlight. The perfect solution would be to include both light sources on the phone, and the LED flash could even be used as an AF light, although for such a purpose focused light is required.

Samsung i900 Omnia
http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/rev/2008-06/2258/i900_cam.jpg
Our last Samsung phone is i900, based on the Windows Mobile operating system. Our regular readers probably know that the device we have is a prototype used for long-term testing, and it is here in this article, since Samsung claimed that the camera’s software is already final. Still, we didn’t have this impression.
Even in spite of we’re talking about Windows, the software is still quite advanced. There are thirteen preset modes and fourteen effects to choose from, there is face- and smile-recognition, high dynamics range, but exposure sound cannot be turned off, although we think that this should be a default feature. Another weak spot is that we can take images in a sequence only at QVGA resolution, while the sensitivity range is quite short (ISO 50 - ISO 200).

As we have promised we continue the testing of the i900 prototype we received from Samsung.
I'll first talk about the phone's exterior and the use of materials, as from this point of view the handset can be considered as being final. Judging beauty is a completely subjective thing, it's sure that I like the colors and the use of materials very much, they are completely okay. On the front there is a 3.2" touchscreen, which has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. Probably most of you now have a question mark above your heads (you know, like the ones in the cartoons), I was in the same situation, so my first question I had for Samsung was regarding the resolution of Omnia: why isn't it higher? There is no official answer yet, but we think that its due to energy saving. Anyhow, this is a very important matter too, and the 624 MHz CPU probably eats a lot of energy. The battery in the prototype is a 1440 mAh one, but all up-to-date news tell the same.
http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38338_omnia_1.jpg (http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38338_omnia_1_large.jpg)
The display is a high quality one, although it ius very pixelated for someone who is used to VGA resolution. Brightness is ok, but it's still a bit hard to read in bright sunlight, there is still room for imporvements in this matter. The phone gives vibrating feedback for tapping, it does so even for keypresses: I liked this very much, I was much more confident when playing around with the software - this feature can of course be disabled.
http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38338_omnia_2.jpg (http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38338_omnia_2_large.jpg)
I have strayed off a bit from the topic, so let's get back to the use of materials. There is a shiny part around the display, on the bottom there are the call handling buttons and a button that works as a d-pad and a mouse too - I'll write in more detail about how to use this in the next post in the topic. The frame of the fron is silvery and is a real fingerprint collector. This part looks as if it were made of metal, just like the keys, but neither are, they are in fact plastic, but a high quality one. The back is also brushed, but not metal, I think that this is a bit lower quality than the front parts. The sides of the handset are black, on the top right part there is a button that launches the Samsung menu, while in the bottom part there are the volume control keys and the camera's exposure key. There is nothing on the bottom, while on the left we can see the connector for the data cable/headset, on the top the wristband's hook is placed. The power button is on top - this unfortunately has not been tailored for my finger, it is very small, but - as I have observed about three minutes ago - it can shine in many colors, nice.
http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38338_omnia_3.jpg (http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38338_omnia_3_large.jpg)
Thanks to the software that came out yesterday, the phone got much faster, although there are some parts that are problematic, but if development goes on so fast than in two weeks time there will be no problems with it. Just for the sake of curiosity I ran a pocket PC Mark, and i wanted to run VsBenchmark too, but it hung and exited with the error message you can see at the bottom of this page.
Pocket PC Mark v1.03Dhrystone Benchmark (CPU)89.50 MIPSWhetstone Benchmark (CPU)5.87 MWIPSMemory Benchmark629.18 pointsFile system Benchmark339.89 pointsGraphics Benchmark173.70 points
The Dhrystone CPU test is no big deal, but Whetstone is more realistic, anyway I think that there will be better results later. The mark for the memory is quite good (we could say its exceptional), but what is really shocking is the speed of the file system: it got 339.89 marks. I can't really remember which has been the largest number ever in this test, but I think it was around 110-120 points, but I'm sure that no device managed to achieve a score higher than 150 marks. The graphical test also had good results, but I think this could be even better. Next week, when the new ROM will arrive, we'll see if the engineers managed to improve stuff, while next time I'll write about the unique menu system and text entry.

We now continue our blog, and say a thanks for the positive feedback and the questions you sent! I would first like to react to these questions.
In the image viewer zooming in/out the images can be done by magic and with virtual buttons too. The latter one excludes the possibility of making a mistake, while the first one works like scrolling on a notebook's touchpad: we have to stroke our finger on the right side of the screen for zooming. By the way, this works anywhere on the phone, we can even zoom SMS messages! I would like to discuss video playback of movies optimized for computer viewing in a later entry, as I'm not sure that it's a good idea to discuss this at the current software version. I would also like to leave GPS and navigation for a later time, but I'll have a few words about positioning. If we download the current position of the satellites from the net (file size is not more than a couple of kB) then the phone determines our position in a minute, while this process takes a couple of minutes if we don't have this file, so it's completely average. Let's have a look at the phone's physical properties: 112 x 56 x 12.5 mm, and it weighs 127 grams. The plexi that covers the display is made of a hard plastic, it doesn't seem vulnerable at all, it looks rather resistant. I'll also discuss stuff related to internet and WiFi in a later post, as the Opera Mobile 9.5 on the phone deserves a separate story. I didn't get a headset or a stylus with the phone, the latter doesn't really have any room in the case, so it's an external accessory.
And now let's talk about the main topic of this post, the menu system. Before anything else, here's a video which probably demonstrates the speed of the phone quite well, and there are some really spectacular things in it - like the screen rotation animation.
At the beginning of the video we can see the Today screen, which has widgets, just like F480. These are on hand fast, much faster then on F480, but on the other hand animations are still stuttery sometimes. Screen rotation isn't: the phone has a built-in gyroscope to sense how are we currently holding it, and it adjusts the screen according to this. The stick mouse works nice, this was the favorite feature on Omnia of many of my friends.
http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38523_ss1.png http://mobilearsenal.com/dl/new/2008-06/38523_ss2.png
Widget's on the Today screen, Start menu that can be controlled with a finger
Samsung's proprietary menu system can be accessed with the soft key on the right. This is exactly like on F480, but it's a thousand times faster. At these parts, as opposed to the Start menu, the scrolling routine works, but, as you can see it on the video, its speed and efficiency are still far from perfect. The manufacturer, however, is working on this, it has evolved a lot compared to the previous version, so we should be optimistic! The menu has 12 icons, Omnia uses a 3 x 4 layout in portrait view and 6 x 2 in landscape.

Samsung's proprietary menu system
The virtual keyboard is "iPhone-like", meaning that it has QWERTY layout and can be used with fingers perfectly. Besides the full keyboard there are two other views, you can take a look at all of them on the pictures below. Entering accented letters is a bit difficult currently, but the algorithm is good, we can enter words at a proer speed and certainty.

It's PocketPC playoffs and HTC are giving Samsung a match at the GSM Arena. With two of the stars of the season arriving in our office all at once, we thought it's a heck of an opportunity for some Diamond-Omnia-Diamond-Omnia-Diamond-Omnia game-set-match with a pinch of iPhone flavor. We got two aces up to the challenge, so sit back and stretch out. Ah well, get that six-pack too and join us for the kick-off.

Samsung i900 Omnia and HTC Touch Diamond might differ here and there in specs but no doubt we're talking fine top-of-the-shelf species. Never before have Windows Mobile powered devices been so rich in features without being coyote-ugly (another way of saying TyTN-bulky).
It's been a year now since Apple iPhone is out and its ground-breaking user interface took the industry by a storm. Windows Mobile however still fails to pick up the gauntlet thrown by the iPhone so device manufacturers are creating their own customized touch interfaces that don't necessarily require a stylus to make the Microsoft OS a bit more competitive and much more intuitive.
It took almost a year to see all manufacturers introduce their solutions. With the HTC Touch Diamond we are looking at the third generation TouchFLO UI - a really mature and impressive piece of software. The Omnia and its TouchWiz UI is Samsung's first attempt in this field, but they're building on their expertise in full touchscreen feature phones and they have achieved some impressive results too.
So you already probably guess that we will be spicing up today's Windows Mobile competition with a few Apple iPhone quotes. With the iPhone 3G just behind the corner, we think that several key generic comparisons might be of use to most of you. But for starters, check out some photos of the contenders lining up for the Windows Mobile cup. Slick, aye?

Samsung i900 Omnia
Before we begin today's match, we should warn you about the units we are testing. The Samsung i900 Omnia is still a beta version, while the HTC Touch Diamond is a retail unit. However, dozens of bugs are being reported for the Diamond recently, so it isn't actually as stable as it should be. In fact, HTC are struggling to polish the Diamond performance, which - even though utterly impressive - is rather unfinished at its launch. Looks like HTC made haste to beat the iPhone 3G announcement.

Design and construction
HTC Touch Diamond measures only 102 x 51 x 11.5 mm, while Samsung i900 Omnia stands at 112 x 56.9 x 12.5 mm. The extra centimeter of height and the 5 millimeters of width do make a difference, even if that's not so obvious in the photos. The Diamond feels really better in hand, while the Samsung is on the hefty side. Still both devices are slim enough and easily pocketable, so there probably won't be a great number of people to be put off by size either way.

The two contenders for the WinMo throne
The weight of the Omnia is 127 grams, which is a good 17 grams more than the HTC Touch Diamond. Heavy as it sounds for a regular phone, in the world of PocketPC those numbers are actually quite an achievement. There is only a handful of Windows Mobile Pro powered devices out there to weigh significantly less than the Omnia and only the LG KS20 is more lightweight than the Diamond.
Our preferences definitely go with the HTC Touch Diamond when design is in question. Now don't get us wrong - the Samsung i900 Omnia is by no means ugly or something but it is simply not as chic as the gem-inspired HTC device. In fact, the all-around metallic frame gives the i900 a very sophisticated and stylish look. Here is a bunch of photos of the two handsets, so you can make up your mind.
Both devices have similar front panel layout. The earpieces are placed dead center at the top, with the video-call cams to the right. The Samsung i900 Omnia ambient light sensor is next to the secondary camera, while the one on HTC Touch Diamond is integrated in the earpiece grill.

The top of the front panel is similar on both handsets
Next in line are the displays - a 3.2" QVGA unit is the Samsung way, while the Diamond features a 2.8" VGA screen. Both will get their due coverage a little later in the article.
Talking about hardware controls on the front panel, the HTC Touch Diamond definitely has an advantage over its South Korean competitor. It has four keys and a D-pad with a touch-enabled scroll wheel around it. The back key and the home screen shortcut might be a welcome perk for many and a serious advantage - in terms of handling - for the Diamond.

HTC Touch Diamond has more hardware controls on the front panel than the Omnia
The back key is a novelty among Windows Mobile devices, and a welcome novelty we might add. It is really taking user-friendliness a level up. After all, almost all other phones have it and it was about time WinMo gadgets caught up.
The Diamond's scroll wheel also deserves some attention. It is really nice to use and adds a bit of fun to some of the applications. Unfortunately, its use is limited to picture and web browsing (zooming in and out), emails and messaging (font enlarging) and Music player (fast- forwarding and rewinding).
All the Omnia can offer in return is an optical joystick, which can also be used for thumbing around a virtual mouse cursor in a way similar to Samsung i780 (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i780-2124.php).
The nice thing about the Omnia's optical joystick is that its speed is configurable. You can also disable the virtual mouse and use the joystick as a thumb pad. In this mode a sweep in any direction moves your active selection accordingly but only one row or an item a time. So in order to get to the bottom of your Start menu for example, you have to make a lot of sweeps.
The HTC Touch Diamond volume rocker is on the left side along with the USB slot at the bottom. There is no dedicated camera key and the D-pad is used instead. It has nice two-way action, whereby a touch counts as a half-press and the actual press is a…well... full press. A smart move it is by HTC, preserving the dual-press functionality with no need for a dedicated shutter key. In all fairness however, a dedicated camera key is still the more convenient solution, scoring a point for the Omnia imaging department.

The left, right and bottom sides of the Diamond an the Omnia compared
What we don't really like about the Omnia is the non-standard USB slot it utilizes. After all, the miniUSB on the Diamond is much more popular and chances are a spare data cable is just lying around.
The power keys on both the HTC Touch Diamond and the Samsung i900 Omnia are placed at the top. The one on the Diamond is large enough and quite tactile, so we have no issues there. The Omnia power key however is too tiny and recessed and did get on our nerves now and then.

As usual, the power keys are on top
The cameras are rearside on either of the gadgets. Samsung i900 Omnia has a 5 megapixel snapper which, as we managed to confirm, is quite a decent performer. It also features a LED flash, which should supposedly get you covered for some of those night party shots. In reality, it does a job not so impressive with the effective range being down to a meter. It can also be used as a flashlight with the built-in application in the Omnia.

The camera on the Omnia is a whole lot better
HTC Touch Diamond has a 3 megapixel camera with no flash. The lens is better protected here than in the Omnia, as it's recessed deeper. That however brings a disadvantage: the lens is harder to clean once it gets dirty. The small aperture is rather hard to reach down to the bottom.
A noteworthy element of the HTC Touch Diamond is its really cool stylus. When you're putting it back in, you don't need to push all the way down. The compartment is magnetic and it literally pulls the stylus in. The stylus is active, so when you take it out, the phone automatically resumes from standby. In addition, taking out the stylus during a call automatically starts the Notes application, which might be convenient for putting down a phone number or an address for example. And there's even a spare stylus in the Diamond retail package.

HTC Touch Diamond's magnetic stylus is really cool
In fact, a stylus is expected to ship in the Samsung i900 Omnia box too. For all we know, that means the stylus will probably be doomed to staying in the box forever, as carrying a stylus in your pocket is a sure way to lose it. This means that the mouse cursor (controlled by the optical joystick) is your only hope in menus where your fingers are just too large to reach.
Both phones are powered by Li-Ion batterie
