Peugeot has released the first pictures of the 206 Sedan, that will be displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The fifth silhouette in the 206 family, the 206 Sedan has been designed by the Peugeot Style Centre.
The rear lights are identical to those of the hatchback and curve around the wing. The boot lid features a registration plate mounted on a chrome-plated mounting panel. The overall style of the rear is inspired by that of the 607.
With an overall length of 4.188 m and a width of 1.655 m, it has a wheelbase of 2.442 m.
Compared to the 3 or 5-door hatchback versions, the increase in overall length (+ 353 mm) is due solely to the extension of the rear overhang, which is increased to 961 mm instead of 608 previously.
This increase is dedicated entirely to increasing the capacity of the boot which, measuring 245 dm3 VDA on the hatchback, rises to 384 dm3 VDA on the 206 Sedan (+ 139 dm3 VDA).
From these preview images we can say that the design lost part of the original appeal and sporty look: the rear end appears overdimensioned especially if compared with the rear wheels.
This confirms how difficult it is to transform a hatchback body into a sedan body without a sacrifice in terms of shape and beauty.

TEHRAN, June 30 (ISNA)-Iran plans to launch its Peugeot 206 sedan export to Turkey, Algeria and Russia from August.
According to Iran Khodro, at the first stage nine hundred 206 sedans are to be exported to the Turkey, Algeria and Russian markets. This figure is to reach 10 thousand within a year.
This Iranian company hopes to enter half of the 39 worldwide markets available for this vehicle by the end of the year.
This is while Peugeot has faced a dilemma regarding this matter. Some in this company agree with Iran's export of this product and some do not, but Iran has strongly announced that it is serious and if Peugeot does not cooperate it will do it itself

Actively continuing its policy of bolstering its range, Peugeot unveils its new "booted" version of the 206. This new silhouette, the fifth model in the range (3 and 5 door hatchback, CC and SW) receives its world première at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. This 4-door saloon will be produced in Teheran, at the Iran Khodro plant from January 2006 for the Iranian market and from March 2006 for export. The 206 sedan is based on the fundamental principles of the 206 range, which ensures a new interpretation for each of the different silhouettes. Available since launch in a hatchback, in 3- and 5-door versions, the 206 has been the object of some innovative developments in response to the expectations of 21st century customers.
206: An international commercial success
To date, more than 5 million 206s are driven on roads across the globe, a testimony to the commercial success of a car that very quickly became a benchmark, combining an assertive, timeless style with the values of dynamism, comfort and safety.
Indeed, the 206 is on the point of beating the all-time production record for a Peugeot model, held by the 205, with 5,278,000 units produced.
Europe's best-selling vehicle from 2000 to 2003, the 206 remains today the leading model for registrations in its segment. It is also Europe's best-selling Diesel vehicle in the small car category.
Illustrating the strong international presence of the Marque, the 206 is sold in 145 countries around the world, and 82% of vehicles produced were exported in 2004.
Manufactured or assembled at six sites worldwide: three in Europe (Mulhouse, Poissy, Ryton), and three outside Europe (Iran, Brazil an Argentina), the 206 has a daily rate of production in excess of 3,100 units.
Three-times world rally champion
An undeniable commercial success, the 206, in its WRC version, has also become a bench mark vehicle in top-level motor sport, with three "constructor" rally world championship titles obtained in 2000, 2001 and 2002, combined in 2000 and 2002 with the "drivers" title for Marcus Grönholm.
A new 206 worthy of perpetuating the 206 line
With the 206 sedan, Peugeot provides a solution for the strong demand in international markets for a small saloon vehicle which provides, in terms of comfort, safety and drivability, a genuine benchmark vehicle for the segment at an international level.
With a length of 4.19 m, or + 35 cm compared to the saloon thanks to an extended rear overhang, and a width of 1.66 m, the 206 sedan is a generous and remarkably roomy saloon.
The style of the 206 sedan is particularly well-balanced, creating an impression of fluidity and dynamism. The integration of an elegant rear aspect, reminiscent of the 607, strengthens the customary versatility of this distinctive and naturally status-enhancing silhouette.
The 206 sedan is available in two trim levels of finish and with two petrol engines: A 1.4 litre engine developing 55 kW (around 75 bhp) combined with a manual gearbox, and a 1.6 litre engine developing 80 kW (around 110 bhp) with the choice of a manual or automatic gearbox.
The agreements between Automobiles Peugeot and Iran Khodro
Since 1988 with the 405, then in 2001 with the 206, Automobiles Peugeot has built up a strong and durable partnership with Iran Khodro which led on 17 June 2004 to the signing of new agreements between Mr Frédéric Saint-Geours, the Managing Director of Automobiles Peugeot and Mr Manteghi, the president of Iran Khodro.
These new developments heralded, in particular, the launch of this new silhouette for the 206, intended for the Iranian market and for export to around 30 nearby countries.
Therefore, in line with the export aspirations of Iran Khodro, Automobiles Peugeot plans to market the 206 sedan from May 2006 in regions of Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Balkans the Near East and the Middle East, and North Africa.
The Iranian car market
With nearly 800,000 private cars registered in 2004, a number that is rapidly increasing, the Iranian car market is the largest Middle Eastern market.
The Iranian government has been keen for several decades to develop a strong local industry. Accordingly, Iran Khodro assembled 57 % of vehicles sold in Iran in 2004.
The sales target in Iran of this new 206 should rise to 50,000 units by 2007.
The Peugeot 206 sedan
Part of a range that has already seen the production of more than 5 million units, the 206 sedan enhances still further the acknowledged versatility of the 206, which in its different versions now represents a fully-formed daisy.
The fifth silhouette in the 206 family, the 206 sedan, is at once modern, elegant and versatile, and has been designed by the Peugeot Style Centre.
It is aimed at a wide range of customers who emphasise the importance of image by choosing a car with demonstrable visual appeal, but are also demanding in terms of the considerable functional attributes offered by the 206 sedan, a vehicle with four doors and a boot.
Equipped from its launch with a proven mechanical specification in terms of engines, transmissions and suspension but, adapted to the different markets in which it will be sold, this new 206 is also generous in terms of convenience and safety equipment.
Style
Since its launch in either a 3 or 5-door hatchback, the 206 has gradually grown as a range, being enhanced by the successive appearance of the coupé cabriolet, and SW.
While presenting different silhouettes, the elegance of their bodywork has always been to the fore thanks to a balanced visual aesthetic consisting of taut, sculpted lines and finely modelled curves.
The style of the new four door, "booted" 206 sedan has a generous and discreet rear design and places it clearly as part of the 206 range, recognised for its feline look and "mischievous" front design.
Indeed, the roof, rear quarter panels, rear windscreen, boot and wings blend together at the front and sides of a 206 easily recognisable by its forward-positioned and inclined front windscreen. At the rear, lights identical to those of the hatchback curve around the wing to reinforce the natural elegance of this car, which also receives a boot lid with a registration plate mounted on a chrome-plated mounting panel.
At once dynamic, practical and user-friendly, this latest addition to the 206 range radiates a style accentuated by the rear design inspired by that of the 607 and which blends pleasingly and gracefully with the natural characteristics of all 206 models.
In its guise as a classic, status-enhancing saloon, the latest edition of the 206 range combines a generous load volume, which is extremely practical, with a graceful overall profile thanks to the purity of the design achieved by the Peugeot Style Centre.
Inside, the fluidity of form and finish common to all 206s creates a welcoming ambience both in terms of its generous interior space and the large number of storage areas.
Inside, passengers perceive and enjoy a spacious car, with a vivacious atmosphere achieved through the use of quality fabrics covering numerous surfaces, and comfort thanks to the quality of the standard equipment placed at their disposal.
Architecture
The architecture of the 206 sedan is similar to that of all 206s, with a transverse-mounted power train in the engine compartment and a rigid steel one-piece structure.
This architecture frees up maximum space for the passenger compartment and its five occupants and contributes to their protection in the event of an impact by providing designed crumple zones. This car is available with Petrol and Diesel engines and manual and automatic gearboxes.
The interior space of the 206 sedan is the result of a design based on the requirements of the occupants and a generous load capacity that can be expanded still further thanks to the modularity of the passenger seats.
Similarly, the length of the boot floor with the seats not folded increases to 984 mm (+ 235 mm) and, folded, to 1 475 mm, or a length of nearly one and a half metres.
This 206 Sedan not only creates an impression of space and volume; its modern architecture gives it a truly generous load capacity which is both easy and convenient to use.
Structure
Without altering in any way the mechanical characteristics of the 3 or 5-door hatchback models, the structure of the 206 sedan has the same ability to protect its occupants in the event of a serious collision. For example, under its different "exterior" there is a one-piece steel structure that has a full anti-corrosion treatment.
The engine compartment common to all 206s consists mainly of large chassis legs, on each of which, at the front, there are crumble zones intended to dissipate energy in the event of an impact (up to a load of 4.5 t).The presence of a short sub-frame strengthens the front assembly at the level of the bulkhead, while the almost vertical position of the power train frees up absorption space between the engine and the bulkhead, a configuration that also helps to ensure optimal protection for passengers.
On either side of the car, the one-piece body side panel is new and incorporates the rear quarter panel, the rear wing and connections with the roof, itself redesigned, as well as the boot surround and rear windscreen. In addition, a rear parcel shelf manufactured from steel plate connects the rear quarter panel pillars and supports anchorage points for the outer rear seat belts. This parcel shelf also helps to ensure excellent acoustic insulation between the passenger compartment and the boot.
For the passenger compartment, the body sides are braced by numerous cross members, for example between the outer side members and the central tunnel, which is itself lined, and also on three levels in the upper part of the bulkhead and at the top of the front and rear windscreens, the rear parcel shelf, and lastly under the rear passengers on the rear suspension assembly.
The four doors have longitudinal reinforcements and padding (front doors) which, with a generously dimensioned 'B/C' post, contributes to the excellent protection afforded to passengers.
The rear floor, its length increased by 353 mm, receives a U-shaped spare wheel tray. At the rear, the entrance to the boot is reinforced by a cross member that connects the end of each side member.
In terms of passive safety the design and assembly of the structure of the 206 Sedan, offers a high level of rigidity, enabling it to protect its occupants and also to exploit the full potential of its suspension.
In addition, passengers are protected by two front air bags and pretensioning seat belts with force limiters. Each of the three rear passengers benefits from 3-point inertia reel seat belts.
Engines
The 206 Sedan is available with two 4-cylinder petrol injection engines - the TU3 with a capacity of 1360 cm3 and the TU5 with a capacity of 1586 cm3. These modern engines feature multi-point injection technology and have a toothed timing belt drive for the camshafts – one overhead camshaft and eight valves for the TU3A – two overhead camshafts and 16 valves for the TU5JP4. Both engines are also capable of operating on fuels with different octane ratings.
For example, the TU3A develops a maximum power of 55 kW (around 75 bhp) at 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 120 Nm at 3400 rpm regardless of the fuel used.
According to the octane rating being used, the TU5JP4 engine, adapted to various situations, develops 80 kW at 5800 rpm (around 110 bhp) while with an octane rating below RON 95 it develops 78 kW (around 105 bhp) at 5600 rpm. Torque values are respectively 147 Nm or 142 Nm at 4000 rpm.
These engines with integral electronic management meet regulations in force in the different countries in which they are sold, particularly the Euro 4 standard.
Transmission
Both engines are available with a MA5 manual 5-speed gearbox. With the 1.6 litre engine it is possible also to choose an automatic gearbox with electronic management and four speeds (AL4). All gearboxes are maintenance-free.
The MA5 gearbox has a different set of gear ratios depending on the engine with which it is fitted and thus provides power and torque characteristics specific to each engine. Operated manually by means of a gear lever mounted on the centre console, the gearbox also has a device which prevents the driver from accidentally engaging reverse gear when changing from fifth to fourth.
With the engine running on low octane fuel, a low ratio final drive gear is fitted to facilitate moving off and acceleration.
The AL4 automatic gearbox is managed electronically in conjunction with the engine. It can be used in an entirely automatic mode (gear lever positioned in D), or in "Porsche Tiptronic System" sequential mode with the lever positioned on the sequential control position (+ -).This AL4 gearbox also features two special programs, Sport and Snow, which can be activated simply by pressing a button corresponding to the required program. In Sport mode the driver can exploit the capacity of the engine to the full (more dynamic driving) while in Snow mode it is possible to move off in a controlled manner and therefore more easily under conditions of low or very low adherence.
Suspension
The 206 sedan benefits from the traditional and recognised suspension know-how applied by Peugeot throughout its range.
For the suspension, the specification includes at the front two McPherson type struts and lower wishbones with a linked anti-roll bar. Each front strut mounting is composed of a helical spring and a concentric damper. At the rear, two rear suspension arms, two torsion bars, and two inclined dampers and, as on the 206 SW and RC, two tie rods ensure optimum control of the rear wheel suspension geometry.
To satisfy tougher than usual driving conditions (CRD), the basic specification of the 206 sedan includes the following special features:
- A 20 mm increase in the ground clearance and overall height of the car, obtained by increasing the height of the springs.
- Re-positioning of the damper bump stops.
In addition to these special features, there is a "protection" plate fitted under the power train.
The dual circuit vacuum-servo braking system of the 206 sedan is of course adapted to the performance of each of the two proposed engines.
With the 1.4 litre engine, the front brake discs have a diameter of 247 mm and a thickness of 13 mm. At the rear, drums with a diameter of 8 inches complete the system.
The performance of the 1.6 litre engine sees disc brakes mounted at the front and at the rear. The diameter of the ventilated front discs is 266 mm with a thickness of 22 mm while at the rear, non-ventilated discs have been used (247 mm discs with a thickness of 8 mm).
XT versions receive as standard an anti-lock braking system (ABS) as well as emergency brake assist (EBA). During emergency braking, ABS preserves the car's direction and stability, while EBA authorises maximum braking assistance, and therefore efficiency, as swiftly as possible in emergency situations. Electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) on each wheel also ensures the car's stability under all circumstances.
During severe braking, the hazard warning lights come on automatically and are switched off either by accelerating away or by pressing the hazard warning light switch.
As on all 206s, the 206 sedan is equipped with rack and pinion steering with hydraulic power assistance.

Suspension:
The 206 RC flexes its muscles via exceptional connections (suspension) to the ground, with great efficiency. This results in outstanding handling, whilst preserving comfort.
The front has specific adjustments benefiting the drivability and the stability of trajectory, while latest generation rear wheel-axle unit, matches the performance of the engine while optimising general guidance and balance.
Its rear wheel-axle unit received an additional two ties, which connect the arms to the crosspiece and as previously implemented on the 206 SW.
The suspension is complimented with Pirelli P7000 tires of size 205/40 R17 W, fitted on 7” wide aluminium rims.
Also fitted is speed sensitive power steering, modulated according to the engine, which gives the 206 RC a good perception of direction, eg feedback.
The 206 RC is equipped with ESP (dynamic check of stability) of which has the joint function of anti-spin and corrective handling. It can be disconnected with a switch on the dashboard.
The brake discs and the callipers are dimensioned in accordance to the performance and the endurance expected in this type of sporty version.
As for handling, the 206 RC is equipped with a suspension particularly adapted to the performances and the sporting character of this vehicle, without sacrificing passenger comfort.
Suspensions specifications:
The front has pseudo McPherson triangles with an uncoupled anti roll bar of the size Ø 21 mm, and pressurized hydraulic dampers with 3 bars to fulfil shock absorber duties.
To maximise handling and obtain the best from the suspension set-up, the adoption of Pirelli P7000 tires in associated with a train diagram (modified when compared to the 206 S16 - caster 5,5 mm ± 1 instead of 2,5 mm) and a stiffening of the springs (40 mm/100 daN instead of 55 mm/100 daN) brings at the same time pleasure of control, drivability, and a good stability.
The rear axle unit is fitted with interdependent drawn arm, which is mated with two torsion bars Ø 20 mm, an anti-roll bar of Ø 22 mm, and two hydraulic dampers. For maintaining the guidance of the rear wheel-axle unit and to reduce the steering induced under transverse forces (which occurs mainly with the new dynamic performances of the car thanks to its engine and with the increased rigidity of the tires) the train receives two ties which connect the suspension arms to an light alloy cover interdependent of the cross-piece.
The Ø 21 mm front anti roll bar and Ø22 mm rear bar are different from the GTi version to compensate for the added stiffness related to the springs and to increase drivability creating a generally balanced vehicle for sporting use. The 206 RC is fitted with a dynamic stability check (E.S.P.) from TEVES, type MK60. It allows, in extreme situations and at the limits of physics, to improve the safety of control in the event of a brutal blown tire or avoidance, while remaining a real lively pleasure all the time. The function is switched off by a pushbutton located on the instrument panel on the left of the steering column. After having disconnected the system, a push on the button or restarting the engine restores the function.
The steering rack is equipped with hydraulic assistance, modulated according to the engine speed. When driving, the driver profits a higher degree of accuracy and a good feedback, while at lower engine speeds, like parking the car, the assistance is at its maximum. This assistance decreases gradually and starting from the engine speed of 3 800 rpm it is stabilized with assistance at its minimal value.
The brakes are set up with four discs, the fronts are ventilated and are 283 mm in diameter and 26 mm in width and two solid disks in the rear which are 247 mm in diameter and 8 mm in width. They are fitted with single piston callipers with a diameter of 54 mm on the front and a diameter of 32 mm on the back.
The 206 RC is equipped with ABS made by TEVES series MK 60 allowing it to gather all the functions dependent on braking, the control of trajectory (E.S.P.), the anti-spin (A.S.R.) by the speed sensors fitted at the wheels.
The ABS guarantees a maximum deceleration where necessary while preserving an excellent proportioning effort on the pedal at the time of weak and average decelerations. In the event of strong deceleration (8 m/s2) hazard-warning lights of the vehicle are automatically activated.
For proof of the sporting temperament of the 206 RC, the estimated performances are as follows (only driver on board):
Max speed: 220 kph + (on a circuit)
1000m standing start under 28 sec
0-100 under 7.5
Mid acceleration 80-120 in 5th under 11 sec.
All of this will add to an easy and pleasant control and nevertheless always effective.
