Networking
Let the acronyms fly: the Vaio has WAN, LAN and PAN, not to mention WiFi. OK, that means it has an integrated Sony Ericsson GSM radio which supports GPRS and EDGE (WAN), wired 10/100 Ethernet (requires the included dongle or docking cradle since those each have a RJ45 port), Bluetooth (personal area networking) and 802.11b/g. The unit has the Intel Pro/Wireless chipset for WiFi, which is a part of Intel's mobile package. It's reliable, comes with good management software and good security support. The Vaio has decent WiFi range, though not as good as full-sized Vaio notebooks. It's on par with the Samsung Q1 and some of the stronger PDAs for signal strength and beats the OQO model 01. Should you need better range when far from an access point you can use Intel's power management software to increase reception (and power consumption, but not by much). Bluetooth behaves well (if such a thing can ever be said) and the Sony uses Toshiba's Bluetooth stack. You can use it with Bluetooth stereo headphones, GPS, mobile phones and PDAs among other things.
The built-in EDGE radio supports both EDGE and the slower GPRS standard. It's strictly for data and there's no software for making voice calls.There's a SIM card slot under a tiny hump on the left side, affixed with a single tiny phillips head screw (the door must be closed securely or the Vaio will complain that the SIM door is open). So yes, you could pop your phone's SIM in there, but by the time you take out your phone's battery, remove the SIM, unscrew the door on the Vaio and pop the SIM in there you could've already checked your email with your BlackBerry or Treo. Life is easier if you can leave the SIM in there, should you plan on frequent EDGE network use. Or use your Bluetooth phone as a wireless modem, though we found we got better download speeds using the EDGE radio rather than Bluetooth. The UX is sold locked to Cingular (odd thought, now even notebooks are locked to cellular providers). But you can call Sony support to get an unlock code should you wish to use another carrier's SIM card in the Vaio. Cingular's connection manager software is pre-installed and is easy to use (though it's an older version than that currently available on Cingular's web site). It comes pre-configured to work with Cingular's data service (ISP.cingular), though you can create your own profile for Cingular's other data service (MEdiaNet, which we tested) and even other carrier's services such as T-Mobile if you've unlocked the EDGE radio. The UX has very good reception on Cingular's network and we got around 145k. Do raise the antenna, it gets you two bars more reception. The UX180P comes with a 30 day Cingular trial, and current Cingular customers get a hefty discount on service.

At the current CEATEC Japan 2006 show Fujitsu has introduced a couple of mobile PC concepts – Turn Tablet PC and Ultra Mobile. The first one is quite a big notebook with the sensor screen, powered by Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. It is peculiar for its white backlit sensor keyboard. This approach solves the problem of dirty keyboards and the cleaning.
The second concept, Ultra Mobile, is a compact PDA-media player of original construction. According to the photos it consists of two revolving parts. The device is equipped with a microphone, a camera, several USB-ports. Well, there are no more details.

HTC Shift
http://www.america.htc.com/images/content/banners/shift_banner.jpg
http://www.htcclub.net/pictures/articles/htc-shift.jpg
* VIA CPU (the one we tried had a 1.2GHz chip)
* Vista business (yes, it was running Aero)
* 7-inch sliding, tiling wide-touchscreen
* 30GB drive
* Tri-band UMTS / HSDPA, quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE
* WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
* Biometric reader, front-facing camera

Today, at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association’s (CTIA) WIRELESS 2007®, High Tech Computer Corp. (TAIEX: 2498; “HTC”), the world’s leading provider of Microsoft® Windows Mobile®-based smart devices, announced the expansion of its product portfolio to include two new groundbreaking computing devices that focus on providing users with the definitive mobile computer experience.
The HTC Shift brings the full power of Windows Vista and advanced wireless connectivity into an innovative and compact design that is sure to create a new paradigm for mobile computing. The HTC Advantage delivers extreme portability that leverages the mobile office strengths of Windows Mobile 6 and advanced wireless connectivity in one of the smallest mobile computer designs available.
“The introduction of the HTC Shift and Advantage continue HTC’s long history of innovative, precedent-setting devices,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC. “These new devices bridge the gap between being mobile and being in the office, giving customers new choices for how they work, communicate and live.
With nearly a decade of experience designing and building pioneering smartphones, HTC is extending its mobile convergence leadership into a new mobile computing category created by the introduction of the HTC Shift and HTC Advantage. The company is now doing for mobile computing what it did for mobile phones, adding powerful functionality and advanced connectivity in compact and innovative designs.
HTC Shift
Unveiled at CTIA, the HTC Shift combines the power of Windows Vista with an innovative QWERTY-based keyboard design and 3G-connectivity. The days of compromising productivity for portability are gone. The HTC Shift provides all the power, functionality and connectivity the busy professional needs in a sleek design that is half the size and a fraction of the weight of what they lug around today. Similar in size to a couple of DVD cases, the HTC Shift comes with Windows Vista Business, includes a brilliant 7-inch widescreen touch display and a 30-gigabyte hard drive. Packed with advanced connectivity, the HTC Shift features high-speed global connectivity with Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi. A multimedia maven, the HTC Shift leverages Windows Media Player 11 to provide easy access to music, videos and phtos.
“The HTC Shift is combining the power of Windows Vista with advanced connectivity in a sleek mobile computer design,“ said Bill Mitchell, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows Mobile Platforms Division. “HTC and Microsoft have been innovating on smartphones for years, so it is exciting to see them bring that experience and innovation to mobile computers.”
.................................................. .......................................
HTC Advantage
Developed from the ground up to be extremely portable, the HTC Advantage liberates the traveling executive from their bulky notebook PC. The HTC Advantage includes a thin, magnetically connected QWERTY keyboard and advanced connectivity with Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi. Seamless announces S-XGen flip-and-fold UMPChttp://www.gizmowatch.com/images/seamless_wifi_s-xgen.jpg
Las Vegas-based Seamless Wireless looks to be keeping most of the details on its new UMPC under wraps until CES lands in its hometown early next year, but the design alone should be enough to build at least a modicum of interest from those looking for something a little different than the usual fare. Sure, it's basically just a standard UMPC with a fold-up keyboard stuck on, but every flip and fold on a gadget gets an extra bonus point from us. The only other details that the folks at Seamless seem willing to divulge are that the device will include Bluetooth, WiFi, and cellular connectivity, and that it'll pack a 4-inch LCD and a promised 10 hours of battery life -- at least it did in the concept stage, when Seamless also said it'd be ready for market by October 2006, and that clearly ain't gonna happen

Flooding our senses with new images and news about UMPCs, these “new” kinds of computers have certainly been a major feature of CeBIT 2006. Does all the excitement mark the beginning of the next generation of can’t-live-without consumer electronics product like the mobile phone, or the mp3 player, or is it a demonstration of the might of the Microsoft marketing machine? Here are the facts and you can decide for yourself.
So what’s this all about then?
An Ultra-Mobile PC is a new category of mobile device. Portable and lightweight with a long battery life, it intends on enjoying the mobility of a PDA but harnessing the functionality closer to a laptop. It sits quite neatly between a PDA and a laptop and is not intended to replace either. The major focus of UMPCs is to provide internet access for extended periods of time, have multiple wireless options so they can be connected at anytime, and also be location aware so it can provide local information. These devices are intended to enable work, play, and communication on the go.
OK, but what can it do?
• UMPCs run a variant of the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition OS so can run any full size Windows-compatible applications.
• Connect to the Internet with WiFi, and beyond WiFi hot spots by connecting a Bluetooth-enabled wireless phone.
• Through this connection use e-mail, instant messages, VOIP and accessing the Web.
• Microsoft has also developed the ‘Touch Pack’ for these new devices, an application quick-launcher that sits on top of the Tablet PC OS much like Media Center does on a Windows XP PC. The ‘Touch Pack’ enables UMPC users to browse through their installed programs via a simple touch screen menu, as an alternative to Start menu on the Windows desktop.
And if I want to buy one?
There are currently five products making up the first generation of UMPCs but I’m sure additional models will be brought out faster than a speeding bullet.

While they're nothing special -- or all that original -- in the looks department, Mobits' new X15 UMPCs are looking pretty juicy in the specs. Based on the snazzy new VIA CX700 chipset, which enables hardware TV encoding and WMV9 decoding, the X15s run on a VIA C7M 1GHz processor, and include 512MB or 1GB of DDR2 RAM. The real interesting thing is the displays, which according to the spec sheet run at 800 x 480 for the 7-inch model, and at 1024 x 600 for the 5.6-inch version. Could be a typo, but we're afraid some squinting might be in order. There's of course the standard fare of 802.11a/b/g and 30 or 60GB HDD, along with stereo speakers and a fingerprint sensor. Also included standard is a LAN port, TV-out and an SD card slot. The mouse pointer is the same as that on the TabletKiosk eo UMPCs, and there are options for a built-in camera, GPS, DVB-T and DVB-H. With the odd screen sizes we're not even sure which is which in the pictures, but we'll be sure to be dropping more deets as these get closer to launch.

http://www.mobile-review.com/sadm_files/asus-t83001_440.jpg
At currently running CeBIT 2007 show in Hanover computer equipment makers are offering the visitors various products. At the exhibition the Taiwanese company ASUS has occupied the largest booth with plenty of new devices. One of them is an ultra mobile PC with rotating display – ASUS T83.
The product looks more like a sub-notebook than a classical UMPC. It features a 7” 800x480 pixels touchscreen display, Via C7-M 1 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB HDD. Other specs include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a digital keyboard, a QWERTY-keyboard, 6 hours of offline work and less 1 kg of weight. We expect to see a $900 price tag on it.

Digital Cube i-Station G43 UMPC- the name's bigger than the device
The 4.3 inch Digital Cube i-Station G43 has been announced and further blurs the definition of a UMPC. I’ll bet the 800 x 480 resolution that is the norm for UMPCs will look pretty good on a 4.3 inch screen. The G43 runs the AMD Geode LX800/900 which is a 500 MHz and sports Windows XP, which is just fine for the slower processor. You can get the G43 with either a 30 or 60 GB hard drive (I’d get the 60 GB if I were you) which is more than you need for mobile computing. The inclusion of a trackpad is a nice touch for easy interaction. The G43 is reported to be released in Korea this summer for about $700 which is a pretty nice price indeed.

Weighing in at 690 grams, the Q1 Ultra is 12 percent lighter than the original Q1, which weighs 780 grams. It's also slightly smaller. The Q1 Ultra measures 228 millimeters by 124mm by 24 mm, compared to the Q1, which measures 228 mm by 140mm by 27mm. The improvements will make the device easier to carry around.
Other changes include a sleeker overall look and a 7-inch touchscreen LCD (liquid crystal display) that offers 1,024-pixel by 600-pixel resolution, instead of the 800-pixel by 480-pixel resolution of the original. In addition, the touch-screen keypad on the Q1 has been replaced by a hardware keypad. The keypad is still divided in two parts, with half on each side of the device, so that users can type while holding the Q1 Ultra with both hands.
The Q1 Ultra ships with an 800MHz Intel Corp. microprocessor, 1G byte of DDR2 (double data rate 2) memory, and an external USB keyboard, and adds support for HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) networks and WiBro, a mobile version of WiMax, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

In the Internet you can come across photos of a new device by the Taiwanese company Tatung. These are probably the photos from Computex 2006 show, but it’s better later than never, besides there is surprisingly little info about it. The new device resembles rather a UMPC in size, but it is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 (like HTC Athena).
The manufacturer hasn’t provided any info on this hybrid, except for the photos. So let’s wait till CES show in January." via mobile-review.com

Here’s the SPH-P9000 Deluxe MITs, a PC shaped like a PDA, with Windows XP, a 30GB hard disk, 256MB of RAM, a 5” display, a 1GHz CPU, WiMAX, CDMA EV-DO, and a 1.3Mpix camera. It measures 143x94x29mm and weights 580g.
It looks like everyone in Eastern Asia is working on a new UMPC, and i still couldn't find finance. There must be something wrong with me :D. (Can it be because i'm not Korean?)
UMPC Buzz pointed out a new UMPC from Korea : Uren. There isn't much info about it yet, and their website is Korean , as you can guess. But as i see, it has a 1 GHz CPU , 7" WVGA Touch Screen , Windows XP / XP Embedded , GPS , 30 GB HDD , DMB with 192 * 120.5 * 25 mm size and 695 grams weight. They are touting it as "MobileAutoPC".

Intel this quarter will start selling a Centrino Pro mobile processor that includes the company's vPro technology, which adds security levels to oft-stolen laptop computers.
Code-named Santa Rosa, the package includes a Core 2 Duo processor, an improved graphics chipset called Crestline, and an Wifi adapter. With third-party applications, it also lets IT departments control PCs remotely to fix problems.
But most important are the security features that are part of Intel's Active Management Technology included in vPro. They include the ability to block buffer-overflow threats and to contain infected clients before they damage a network.
The vPro technology gives developers new options, too. For example, security vendors can use the firmware's nonvolatile memory to store information for automatic, off-hours updates of virus definitions or software. Developers can use chipset features that protect applications once malicious code has invaded a desktop. It also assigns memory partitions, so an application can be launched into a contained area. Another feature prevents access to data that's left in memory, a processor cache, or elsewhere when software is closed or if it crashes. The vPro features have been available for business desktop computers since last year, but getting the features into notebooks is pivotal, since those are the greatest security risk.

A new proto of an ultra mobile PC by Fujitsu was introduced at Intel Developer Forum in Peking. Besides Intel announced a new platform for mobile Internet devices (MID) and UMPC at IDF. After it came UMPC protos including Fujitsu’s unit.
I’d remind you that the company had claimed long ago its intentions to release such devices, and it offered concept models. This time we have a real device. No more details are known, so far. But the UMPC is handy and has a full featured QWERTY-keyboard, so it can be used as a small notebook or a tablet PC.

At CES 2007 show Medion has unveiled its new ultra mobile PC MD RIM 1000. This is one of the first models with Origami Experience interface introduced by Microsoft. I’d note that UMPC of the last year featured similar form and dimensions and now everything is getting different. For example, the UMPC by Medion is equipped with a 6.5” display. It is peculiar for variety of input methods – the stylus or the finger with the touchscreen or the keyboard. The release is set for the end of January. Most likely we’ll see the device under different brands, as it is released on the OEM-basis.

Daewoo Lucoms Solo M1 UMPC
http://cache.gizmodo.com/gadgets/upload/2006/07/daewoo_umpc.jpg
Daewoo Lucoms apparently decided to get into the ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) game, shipping its handsomely-styled Solo M1 which has a 7-inch touchscreen, 1.3-megapixel video camera and a DMB TV tuner for those Asians fortunate enough to have access to such signals. It's powered by an Intel Celeron 900 processor.
It looks like the Korean company has attempted to make the small Microsoft Tablet PC a little more versatile by adding a cradle station to its bag of tricks. But if it's anything like its Korean competitor, the Samsung Q1, it's just another pretty face which is awkward to use and doesn't do much of anything very well. We are quite fond of its red trim, however. But red trim and style over substance is not going to get work (or play) done. – Charlie White

Raon Everun UMPC Featuring Enhanced Wireless Access
http://www.mobilewhack.com/raon-everun-umpc.jpg
If you are passing by Seoul this summer, you should take time to check out the new Everun UMPC from Raon. Available in two avataars - Everun STD (we're guessing Standard) and Everun Lite - the UMPC features a 4.8" WVGA (800x480) LCD display that offers auto-rotation and auto-brightness setting.
A huge 7-hour battery life (12 hours with larger battery) is claimed by Raon, attributing it to the power-saving features of the AMD Geode processor and Li-ion battery.
As expected, features include 802.11 b/g WLAN, Bluetooth 2.0 and additionally, HSDPA/Wibro modem. The Everun also offers a QWERTY keyboard. Expect it to hit the Korean markets for KRW 650,000 (US $699) starting late June this year.

Fujitsu unveils new UMPC
http://www.ubergizmo.com/photos/2007/5/fujitsu-umpc.jpg
Fujitsu took the advantage of unveiling its new UMPC at WinHEC, featuring Intel's 800MHz Sealey processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 40GB hard drive. This UMPC also comes with a unique feature by carrying a couple of digital cameras with it - something unprecedented in the world of UMPCs. The display makes it more of a portable console than anything else, since it measures a diminutive 5.6". I suppose this is required in order for the battery to stretch up to 7 hours before requiring a recharge. While it might be a beauty to behold, rest assured it will come at a premium so be prepared to dig deep if you want one

http://www.unwiredview.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/inventec-umpc-7-a.jpg

When's a UMPC not a UMPC? When it's a Micro PC, like the Vaio UX. But when's a UMPC a UMPC... that's not a UMPC? Well, C1 claims to be one, but from what we understand it's not running Tablet with Touch Pack -- just XP -- so while you're getting a very small 2.6 pound 1.6-inch thick device with a 1GHz Via Eden, 80GB drive, 1GB DDR RAM, 8.4-inch SVGA display, PC slot, 3-hour battery, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g, and Ethernet, what you're not getting is an ultramobile PC / Origami / whatever you want to call it. But if those otherwise decent specs weren't enough to convince you of this $1,900 US device's merit outside the UMPC space, peep all those feature logos. Audio recording, MP3 playback, and freakin' 360° rotation, dude! This thing is so obviously an EUMPC; hells yes that E is for "extreme

We first picked up on the Averatec AHI UMPC back in April and today we found more information to indicate this device is going to actually be released. This device is definitely the ***iest UMPC to come down the pike and the controls look very thoughtfully laid out for maximum usage. The AHI features a sliding screen akin to the Sony UX and a QWERTY thumboard that looks almost ergonomically laid out. The AHI is reported to have the same processor as the Samsung Q1 (1 GHZ Celeron, a 30 or 40 GB hard drive, up to a gig of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, 4 in 1 card reader, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The report says the AHI will debut in Q4 of this year for under $800 but frankly I don’t see that happening. It’s a gorgeous UMPC, though
