Your assigned goal is to take over the six turf areas situated throughout the city, which you accomplish by beating the different thugs in various race events. Races involve two opponents and your wingman, but you also have to watch out for commuter vehicles that can send your car flying if you run into them. Every time you win a race, you'll earn money that you can use to buy new cars or upgrade the ones you already have. The physics and handling are loosely based on reality, but they're also reasonably forgiving, to the extent that a few scrapes with a wall won't slow you down much. Your worst enemy is the relentless CPU, or, more to the point, the rubber band artificial intelligence that always keeps at least one opponent right on your tail. To combat the CPU, you can set up your wingman so that he or she will act as a blocker or a drafter during the race. A blocker will try to sideswipe the nearest CPU car, while a drafter will get in front of you and refill your nitrous tank. In theory it's nice to have a choice, but for some crazy reason the nitrous doesn't actually do anything meaningful, which means you'll just end up choosing a blocker for every race.
Most Wanted:
Unlike the console Most Wanted games, which assail the senses with flashy menus, comedic video clips, and free-roaming objectives, the GBA version is set up simply as a series of events that are organized under quickplay and career modes. The career mode is sufficiently drawn out. It organizes 75 different events and 15 individual rival showdowns into 15 chapters. Completing events earns you respect and cash, which can be used to purchase additional licensed cars and dozens of different performance and appearance upgrades for your new rides. Race events are the typical circuit, time attack, and point-to-point competitions that you'll find in any other racing game, although Most Wanted does include one unique event, called "barricade," where you have to try to break through police road blocks without slamming into their cruisers and SWAT vans.
Underground 2:
3D isn't the GBA's strong suit, so it's actually pretty impressive that all the cars and courses in NFSU2 are put together using flat-shaded and texture-mapped polygons. Due to the low screen resolution and the relatively minimal polygon count, the graphics, on the whole, do appear somewhat pixelated, although not to the point that they get in the way of gameplay. The frame rate is smoother in the sequel than it was in the original, the textures are a little cleaner, and the addition of jump ramps and shortcuts to the courses helps make a person feel like he or she's in a city environment. Commuter vehicles also look more realistic this time around, and they often turn onto the main course route instead of just slowly trudging through cross streets. The game's car models are particularly impressive. Changes you make to the body, accessories, and paint job in the garage are reflected out on the street, and the high number of polygons, combined with the sharpness of the car graphics, really serves to put the game's vehicles on center stage. New visual enhancements, such as metallic paint jobs and neon kits, further increase the ***iness quotient. Another nice touch is that you can rotate, turn, and zoom the camera viewpoint in the garage to allow for the ogling of your custom rides.
